Time to go Joe: Root should quit England captaincy for his own good | Cricket | The Guardian

Several former cricketers and experts have come out and slammed the performance of England batters. Among many, former England batter Geoffrey Boycott also slammed Joe Root for his captaincy in the ongoing Ashes series. In his column in The Telegraph, Boycott opined that Joe Root should step down from the captaincy position after this embarrassing performance. He said:

“Now Australia are 3-0 up, and will Root please stop saying Australia are not much better than us? Stop trying to kid us,”

He added: “I think the time has come for Joe Root to leave the captaincy, Except Root, England can’t bat. Our bowling his ordinary.”

Further in his column, Boycott said many of Root’s decisions were wrong highlighting his decision of batting first on a seamer-friendly pitch at the Gabba while leaving out Stuart Broad and James Anderson. He said:

“It’s every cricketer’s dream to captain England and Joe has had 59 Test matches to mould and stamp his authority on this set of players. He has had 13 Tests against Australia with only two wins and nine losses,”

“Nobody would want to give up the captaincy, but it is not about Joe — it is about getting guys to perform better.”
