Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer has found himself in an ugly controversy after he was accused of communal bias during his coaching stint with the Uttarakhand cricket team.

For the unversed, Wasim was appointed as the coach of the Uttarakhand cricket team in June last year. As per some reports, some CAU officials have leveled communal allegations against Jaffer, claiming that the domestic cricket stalwart was trying to create a religious divide within the team.

However, Wasim Jaffer has rubbished the allegations and has termed them as completely ‘baseless’. He also claimed that if this was the case. he wouldn’t have resigned rather he would have been sacked. Earlier this week, Jaffer had stepped down from his position and had asked what is the point of holding such a post when the coach is being mistreated and his recommendations are not being adhered to.

Wasim also took to his Twitter and shared a few facts, explaining his side of the story. In his tweet, he also revealed that he resigned from his position because of the biased selectors-secretary for non-deserving players. He wrote:

“1. I recommended Jay Bista for captaincy not Iqbal but CAU officials favoured Iqbal.
2. I did not invite Maulavis
3. I resigned cos bias of selectors-secretary for non-deserving players
4. Team used to say a chant of Sikh community, I suggested we can say “Go Uttarakhand” #Fact”

Ever since Jaffer has come out with an explanation, several cricketers, experts and fans have come out in support of the former cricketer. Among many, former Indian cricketer and batting coach Anil Kumble also backed Wasim Jaffer.

Replying to Jaffer’s tweet, Anil Kumble came out in support of the former cricketer and wrote that Jaffer did the right thing. He also claimed that it is unfortunate that the players will now miss his mentorship. Kumble wrote:

“With you Wasim. Did the right thing. Unfortunately it’s the players who’ll miss your mentor ship.”
