Asia Cup 2023: Sri Lanka’s Groundsmen’s Salary Is Shocking To Say The Least

Asia Cup 2023: While cricket players enjoy the spotlight and financial rewards of their sport, the groundmen who keep the pitch in pristine condition work tirelessly behind the scenes. These people toil away behind the scenes to keep the playing surface in pristine shape. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, two of India’s top players, recently gave the R Premadasa Stadium’s ground personnel high marks for their efforts during India’s match against Pakistan. The alarming pay gap between them, however, typically goes unreported. It is shocking that groundsmen in Sri Lanka are paid such a small amount for all their hard labour.

The groundsmen at a cricket ground are the unsung heroes of the game. The cricketers can count on ideal playing conditions thanks to their meticulous care of the pitch and outfield. They go to work long before the first ball is played and don’t stop until the last wicket has fallen. These devoted workers often put in long hours of effort in inclement weather to protect the integrity of the game.

Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, playing for India, had nothing but praise for the R Premadasa Stadium ground crew in Sri Lanka during the India vs. Pakistan match. India won the Asia Cup match by a record margin of 228 runs despite the game being interrupted many times by rain over the course of two days. The tireless efforts of the ground team were crucial to achieving this outstanding result.

The shocking truth of the remuneration of the groundsmen in Sri Lanka is highlighted by the laudatory words of cricket greats like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. These hardworking employees, who devote their time and energy on a daily basis to ensuring the success of the game, are compensated with a meagre Rs. 2,000 for their efforts. That’s equivalent to around 550 Indian Rupees, or less than 7 US Dollars.

During the India vs. Pakistan game, the grounds crew’s hard work was on full display. On the scheduled matchday, play was suspended in the first innings’ 25th over due to rain. The Colombo support crew, meantime, kept working. From the time the game was called at 4:53 p.m. until the third umpire finished his inspection at 8:30 p.m., the groundsmen worked feverishly to keep the field safe from the impending thunderstorms.

Asia Cup 2023: Sri Lanka’s Groundsmen’s Salary Is Shocking To Say The Least

There was hope that the game would resume on Sunday, but the weather had other ideas. The rain returned to the stadium, putting an end to any thoughts of a quick resumption of play. However, the ground staff showed their commitment by employing fans and lights to dry the damp areas of the pitch and outfield.

The groundsmen in Sri Lanka are incredible in their commitment and effort. Their dedication to cricket, even in inclement weather, is admirable and should be rewarded well. While their love of the game is what keeps them going, the problem of their pay has to be addressed. Because of their indispensable contributions to the growth of cricket, these people should be rewarded monetarily. It’s past time that something was done to make things right and provide them a more fair and respectable wage and benefits package.

The cricket community should be eternally grateful to the groundsmen who devote their lives to maintaining perfect playing surfaces. Recent acclaim from superstars like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli highlights the hard work. On the other hand, it highlights the critical need to reassess their remuneration and give them the respect and reward they deserve.
