Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan got injured today when unidentified gunmen fired during a protest march in Pakistan. Shots were fired at the container-mounted truck that was carrying Imran Khan in Pakistan’s Punjab province.

Party official Asad Umar said Khan was wounded in the leg but he is now out of danger. The gunmen were arrested at the scene and were not immediately known. No group has claimed responsibility for the shooting so far. Imran Khan was rushed to a hospital.

“He is being taken to a hospital in Lahore, but he is not seriously wounded. A bullet hit him in the keg,” Umar told reporters.

The attack happened in the Wazirabad district in the eastern Punjab province. Khan was traveling in a large convoy of trucks and cars heading towards the capital, Islamabad. “Imran Khan is injured, may Allah protect him, the whole nation should pray for the life of Imran Khan,” PTI’s Farrukh Habib said on Twitter

PTI’s Senator and Imran Khan’s close aide Faisal Javed has also sustained injuries during the firing.

Imran does not seem to have been hurt very badly. A video put out by his party showed him on his feet, waving to supporters with what appeared to be a smile on his face.

Meanwhile, social media has been buzzing with reactions ever since the shocking news came out. Among many, Pakistan cricket team’s captain Babar Azam also took to his social media and condemned the cowardly attack on the former Prime Minister. In his Tweet, he also wished for the protection of the country. He wrote:

“Strongly condemn this heinous attack on @ImranKhanPTI. May Allah keep Kaptaan safe and protect our beloved Pakistan, Ameen.”
