Here’s Why Mohali Will Not Host Even A Single Match In ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

Here’s Why Mohali Will Not Host Even A Single Match In ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

The anticipation surrounding the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 has been marred by a controversy involving the selection of venues. The Punjab Sports Minister recently voiced his discontentment about Punjab not hosting any games, while places like Narendra Modi Stadium and Dharamsala have been given the privilege.

Punjab Sports Minister’s Disappointment regarding not getting a game in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

The Punjab Sports Minister, in an interview with PTI, openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the allocation of matches. “Narendra Modi Stadium is hosting the opening game, the Final and also India and Pakistan,” he said. Further, he highlighted, “The neighbouring Dharamsala is hosting five games, but Punjab has not even got one.” His disappointment was palpable, as he remarked, “That makes it clear that politics is being played.”

BCCI’s Counter-argument

In response to these allegations, the BCCI Vice-President provided a clarification. Speaking to ANI, he mentioned that the 100th Test match of Virat Kohli, a milestone event, was indeed hosted in Mohali, Punjab. He then shed light on the issue of infrastructure, stating that the Mullanpur stadium in Punjab is under construction. “If it was ready, they would have got World Cup games,” he mentioned.

A Matter of Standards in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: BCCI Vice-President Reveals Why Punjab Has Not Gotten A Game

The BCCI Vice-President pointed out that the current stadium in Punjab failed to meet the standards set by the ICC, which led to it being denied World Cup matches. According to him, this was not an issue of politics, but rather one of meeting international cricketing standards. He assured that the Punjab venue would get bilateral matches in the future.

The Bigger Picture

Such controversies bring to light the complexities involved in hosting an international event of this magnitude. While the disappointment of the Punjab Sports Minister is understandable, the BCCI Vice-President’s explanation offers a counterpoint that cannot be ignored. Standards set by the ICC must be adhered to for ensuring the smooth conduct of the tournament and providing an enjoyable experience to players and spectators alike.

A Future Promise

The assurance given by the BCCI Vice-President about Punjab hosting bilateral series in the future should be a solace for the state. Once the Mullanpur stadium meets international standards, Punjab can look forward to hosting more cricketing events, putting this controversy to rest.

In conclusion, this controversy surrounding the allocation of matches for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 has underscored the need for transparent and clear communication between the cricketing body and the state sports ministries. While the disappointment of Punjab not hosting a match is legitimate, the issues of infrastructure and international standards are equally valid. In the future, the cricket-loving state of Punjab can look forward to hosting more international cricket, contributing to the sport’s growth and development in the region.

Mullanpur stadium is getting ready, if it was ready, they would have got WC games, current stadium did not meet up with the standards of ICC, hence it was denied the match but they will get bilaterals".
