Sporting activities around the world have been halted because of the dangerous Coronavirus pandemic. Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, many tournaments and leagues have been suspended for an indefinite time, including IPL 2020.
IPL was initially scheduled to start from March 29, however, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the BCCI decided to suspend the league until April 15. Later, as the nationwide lockdown extended in India, BCCI had suspended until April 15.
Now as the situation is worsening in the country, it seemed that the IPL 2020 will be canceled this year. However, as per the latest updates, BCCI was looking for a window later this year but was waiting for the schedule of the T20 World Cup. Also, there were speculations that the BCCI will be hosting IPL 2020 in either UAE or Sri Lanka.
Now after weeks of speculations, the T20 World Cup in Australia, which was supposed to take place later this year, will be officially postponed this week. The decision will be officially announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket Australia (CA). The announcement will finally give new lease of life to Indian Premier League’s 2020 edition.
Recently, while speaking to Mayank Agarwal on a chat show, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said that the upcoming 3-4 months are going to be tough, providing no details on when the IPL 2020 can be held.
After the BCCI President’s statements, Arun Singh Dhamal, the BCCI’s treasurer has now given an update on the IPL 2020. Arun Singh said that hosting the IPL 2020 abroad is the last resort option. He said that the only way to hold the cash-rich league abroad is if there’s no way to hold the tournament in India.
Arun Singh Dhamal is very confident about holding the IPL in India, saying that the BCCI will think of India first when it comes to choosing a destination for IPL.
BCCI’s treasurer also revealed that they will take a call about holding the IPL in the next IPL Governing Council meeting.
