As the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League is just around the corner, Delhi Capital’s coach Ricky Ponting stirred a huge debate as he recalled the controversial ‘Mankading’ incident that took place last year.
The debate over whether Mankading is in the spirit of the game or not was reignited last year after R Ashwin dismissed Joss Buttler using the same method during a match between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals.

Well, what happened was Joss Buttler, who was playing for Rajasthan Royals, was at the non-striker’s end and was moving away from the crease again and again. On seeing that, R Ashwin took off the bails and appealed straight away, leaving the entire cricket fraternity in shock.
While everything was under the rule but R Ashwin was brutally slammed for the same as this was widely seen against the spirit of cricket.
Recently, Delhi Capitals’ Coach Ricky Ponting said that he will be having a conversation with R Ashwin, who will be playing for DC in IPL 2020 and tell him to not Mankad anyone. He had said:
“I’ll be having a chat with him about [mankad], that’s the first thing I’ll do,” Ponting said while speaking on The Grade Cricketer Podcast.

“Obviously, he wasn’t in our squad last year, he’s one of our players that we tried to bring in this year. Look, he’s a terrific bowler, and he’s done a great job in the IPL for a long period of time now, but I must admit watching that last season, as soon as it happened and he did that, I actually sat our boys down and said ‘Look, I know he’s done it, there’ll be others around the tournament who’ll think about doing this well but that’s not going to be the way that we play our cricket. We won’t be doing that’,” he added

Now Brad Hogg, the former teammate of Ricky Ponting, has reacted to his statements and asked him whether the batsman leaving the crease before the ball is delivered within fairplay. He wrote:
“Batsman leaving the crease before the ball is delivered, when they know they’re getting an advantage, is that in the spirit of the game! #cricket #IPL2020“
