Australian team is always known for their stubbornness and ability to perform in the biggest moments. They are undisputed kings of ICC tournaments. Australia under Pat Cummins managed to defeat a strong India side in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 in Ahmedabad. Team India were dominant throughout the whole tournament, having won 10 games dominantly till the day of the final. However, the Aussies managed to perform on the big D day and clinch the title.

They also came to the T20 World Cup 2024 as one of the favourites to win the trophy. Mitchell Marsh was leading Australia in the shortest format of the game. They had a good group stage but stumbled in the Super 8 stage. They were defeated by Afghanistan and the suffered a thrashing in the hands of India. Australia were ultimately knocked out of the tournament in the Super 8.

There was a lot of criticism on the captaincy of Mitchell Marsh after Australia’s lacklustre performance in the T20 World Cup. Former Australia fast bowler Brett Lee supported Mitchell Marsh after Australia’s performance in the T20 World Cup 2024. He also stated that he is not sure whether the selectors asked Pat Cummins to not captain the shortest format or he himself took the decision. However, he agreed that captaining the team in three formats carry huge workload.

“It’s very hard for me to make a comment on that because I’m not around that inner sanctum. I don’t understand whether it was the call that Pat Cummings didn’t want to captain the T20 World Cup. I don’t know whether they wanted to go down a different road and maybe blood another younger guy in to Mitchell Marsh and maybe take the workload off Pat Cummins, it’s very hard to speculate,” Lee told CricTracker.

“But all I know is that when you do pick a captain, you have to back the captain 100%. He’s out there trying his hardest. The captain can’t always win the game. And I think that when you have had the success as Pat Cummins has had, though, he’s done a great job as captain and as leader. Maybe he wanted a break. But as I said, that’s just purely speculation. I don’t know anything else,” Lee added.
