Can India Still Qualify For The T20 World Cup Semi-Final, After 2 Defeats?

The Indian cricket team entered the T20 World Cup 2021 tournament, billed as the favorites, however, the Indian team has left everyone heartbroken with their performances so far in the ongoing high-voltage tournament. India started their campaign with the worst possible start as they suffered a humiliating 10-wicket defeat and that too by arch-rivals Pakistan in their maiden match of the ongoing tournament, which was followed by an 8-wicket defeat to New Zealand on Sunday.

From team selection, performances, to even body language and mental strength of Indian side has come into the question after two humiliating defeats.

India’s defeat against New Zealand has led the cricket fans in the country to sit down with calculators and figure out the combinations and order, in order to find how India can qualify for the semi-finals. These two big defeats meant India’s Net Run Rate has taken a massive beating.

For the unversed, we should tell you that only two teams from each of the two Super 12 groups will qualify and India’s chances are looking impossible at the moment, looking at the points table of Group 2.

Currently, the Pakistan cricket team is sitting at the top of the points table with 3 wins off the 3 games they have played so far. Afghanistan is sitting at the second position, having won 2 games off the 3 they have played.

Talking about India, the Men in Blue are currently sitting at the fifth position in the points table with a net run rate (NRR) of -1.609.

Both New Zealand and Namibia have played as many games as India with both having won one and lost one game each, and this is where the team finds themselves in trouble, having lost both the games they have played so far.

However, there is still some hope left for the Indian side. While Pakistan with their unbeaten run is sure to become the first contender to qualify for the knockouts from Group 2,  3 teams are still competing against each other for the second spot in Group 2 of the Super 12 – Afghanistan, New Zealand, and India.

Can India Still Qualify For The T20 World Cup Semi-Final, After 2 Defeats?

India’s chances of qualifying for the knockouts also depend upon the fate of other teams as well. In order to qualify, team India will first hope for New Zealand to lose one of their next 3 games, which are Scotland, Namibia, and Afghanistan.

But if they manage to win their next three games against the aforementioned teams, it will come down to net run-rate, also where India is struggling badly.

The Men in Blue will be seen locking their horns with Afghanistan on Wednesday. The clash is a crucial one for the Indian side as it could also be a detrimental factor because another defeat will ensure that they are indeed knocked out of the tournament in the group stage itself.
