Can SRH Still Qualify For IPL 2023 Playoffs?

Despite spending a big amount in the IPL 2023 mini-auction, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) continue to find themselves struggling in the tournament.

They are currently placed at the 9th position in the 10-team Indian Premier League 2023 with only 3 wins in 8 matches and are all but out of the playoff race.

Under new skipper Aiden Markram, SRH’s batting woes remain, while their expensive 13 crore signing Harry Brook has come good in only one matches out of 8 so far. Shuffling of batting order has also not helped their cause.

They started the tournament with a couple of losses before bouncing back to win two on a trot. After that, though, they made a hat-trick of defeats and only recorded their third win recently, over the bottom-placed Delhi Capitals by 9 runs.

How can SRH still qualify for playoffs in IPL 2023?

Yes, SRH, who have 6 points in 8 matches, are still alive in the playoff race, at least mathematically. But, they would need a miracle – of winning at least 5 out of remaining 6 matches – to reach the playoffs.

How many points do a team need for qualifying for playoffs in IPL?

Let’s go back to the 10-team IPL 2022 tournament to see what is the least amount of points for which a team can qualify in the playoffs.

In the 10-team IPL 2022, the team at the 4th spot to enter the playoffs last year – which was RCB – had 16 points while DC and PBKS with 14 points each just missed the playoffs. DC lost their last match but would have gone into the playoffs had they won their last league match because they had a better NRR than RCB in IPL 2022.

So, all is not over for SRH. But they need 10 points (5 wins) in 6 matches to make a strong contention for playoffs in Indian Premier League 2023.

Their next match is against another struggling team, Kolkata Knight Riders, on May 4.
