Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has cemented his place in the Test side at number 3 with a three brilliant innings against England in the last three Tests. This was after his place in the side was on the line amid a lean patch.

Gill managed scores of 23, 0, and 34 in the first three innings of the Test series. In what seemed like a defining knock from the youngster, he bounced back with a century in Vizag, before recording scores of 91 in Rajkot, and 52* in Ranchi, all in winning causes as India take a 3-1 lead after being 0-1 down.

The hallmark of his 52* in a tricky run chase was his toning down aggression and not going for boundaries until he felt the match was in the bag. His first boundary came off the 10th ball he faced.

He said, “This would probably go down as my only innings where I didn’t hit a boundary, like a four, after scoring a fifty. But you have to see the situation and you have to play the situation sometimes, and I think the way their bowlers were bowling, they were bowling really good lines. So it was important for us to just keep playing the game and not let the bowlers bowl too many maidens. Keep taking the singles, and as soon as they gave us anything loose, try to pounce on that.”
