Cricket Fraternity Erupts After Shreyas Iyer Scored His Maiden Century

2021 has been no less than a roller-coaster ride for Shreyas Iyer. Having led Delhi Capitals to the final of IPL 2020 last year, scoring 519 runs with the bat, Iyer was removed from the captaincy position after he suffered an injury setback earlier this year. The middle-order batsman even had to miss the first half of the IPL 2021 because of his dislocated shoulder. After months of rehab, returned to cricket during the UAE leg of IPL and showed decent form and great intent as he amassed 175 runs from 8 games.

Later on, Iyer was named in India’s T20 World Cup, however, was removed and drafted back into the main team during the 3 T20Is against New Zealand. Though, Iyer made his ODI and T20I debut in 2017 but had to wait a long time to earn his maiden Test cap, despite having great numbers in first-class cricket.

Coming into the Kanpur Test, Shreyas Iyer grabbed the opportunity with both hands and made the occasion even bigger with a stunning century on his maiden Test match.

The talented right-hander got the perfect opportunity to showcase his talent to the world with the team missing key players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul. Iyer didn’t let the pressure get to his head and gave a crucial performance just when the team needed it the most.

On Day 2, Shreyas began the day by smashing Kyle Jamieson for a four. He finished day 1 remaining unbeaten on 75. Though his batting partner Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed for his overnight score of 50, but Iyer carried on and smashed some stunning shots. It didn’t take him long to add 25 runs to complete his maiden century.

Iyer became the 16th Indian batter to score a century on his Test debut. He joined an elite list of batsmen who gave smashed century on maiden Test, which includes: Mohammad Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, and Shikhar Dhawan.
