During the IPL 2024 opener between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Chepauk, Virat Kohli achieved a significant milestone. When Kohli reached six runs in the match, he became the first Indian to score 12,000 runs in T20 cricket.
Notably, Virat Kohli took only 377 innings to reach this milestone, placing him sixth among the top run-scorers in T20s. Chris Gayle leads with 14,562 runs, followed by Shoaib Malik, Kieron Pollard, Alex Hales, and David Warner. Kohli also became the second-fastest player to reach 12,000 runs, after Chris Gayle achieved it in 353 innings.
Virat Kohli Created A Huge Record During IPL 2024 Season Opener
If Kohli manages to score a half-century, he will have the opportunity to become the first Indian to achieve 100 scores of 50 runs or more in T20 cricket. Currently, only Chris Gayle with 110 scores, and David Warner with 109 have more than him.
In IPL 2023, Kohli scored a total of 639 runs with a strike rate of 139.82 and an average of 53.25. He had an impressive season, managing to score two centuries and six fifties. Despite Kohli’s strong performance, RCB didn’t qualify for the playoffs. They finished sixth in the points table with 14 points.
Kohli holds the record for the most runs scored in the IPL, with a total of 7274 runs from 238 matches. This includes seven centuries and 50 half-centuries.

Virat Kohli made history during his innings against CSK, but he couldn’t turn his start into a big score. The former RCB captain only managed to score 21 runs off 20 balls before getting dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman, thanks to a fantastic fielding effort from Ajinkya Rahane. Kohli hit one six during his innings.
He’ll be aiming to score big in the upcoming games to strengthen his chances for a spot in India’s T20 squad for the T20 World Cup. According to media reports, selectors are hesitant to pick him, and they might reconsider only if he has an exceptional performance in the tournament.
