Dates For Women’s IPL 2023 Decided; Over 200 Players To Be Shortlisted

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is making swift progress in regard to the inaugural Women’s IPL with the board members now finalizing a tentative date for the tournament that will kick off next year.

It has also been learned that the board will conduct an auction for the selling of the 5 franchises for the WIPL and also an e-auction for the selling of the media rights of the tournament.

In the BCCI’s AGM in October, the Women’s IPL was approved by the BCCI’s General Body.

The BCCI, after a recent Governing Council meeting, asked the selectors to create a pool of players for the WIPL. Cricbuzz has learned that the board has asked the selectors to submit the list of players – Indian and overseas – who would be considered for the first season of the Women’s IPL, which is likely to be held from March 7 to 22.

When will the Women’s IPL 2023 be played?

“The inaugural edition of the Women’s Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to be played in a 15-day window in March,” a report in Cricbuzz said.

The list will comprise over 160-170 Indian players and about 30-40 foreign players, and it will be submitted to the BCCI in a couple of days.

“Before confirming the dates though, the BCCI will be conducting an auction for the media rights followed by another auction for the franchises,” it added.

It has earlier been reported that the board has set the base price for each team at INR 400 crore, but it is expected each franchise of the five franchises to participate next year could be sold for over INR 1,000 crore.

What will be the format of the Women’s IPL?

There will be 20 league games in the tournament with the five teams playing each other twice. The team which will finish as the table toppers will directly reach the final, while the 2nd and 3rd place teams will fight it out in an Eliminator for a place in the final.

The board want to finish the Women’s IPL soon before the men’s IPL 2023 begins in the end of March.
