David Warner Names The Toughest Bowler That He Has Faced And It's Not Stuart Broad

Australian cricket star David Warner recently announced not just his retirement from Test cricket but also from One Day Internationals (ODIs). Warner’s retirement plans have kept fans on the edge of their seats, especially with the revelation that he intends to make a comeback for the Champions Trophy 2025 if Australia requires his services. Amidst these retirement speculations, Warner candidly shared his thoughts on the most formidable bowler he has faced in his illustrious career.

Dale Steyn: The Bowler Who Left David Warner Bewildered

According to Warner, the title of the toughest bowler undoubtedly goes to South African speedster Dale Steyn. The pivotal moment Warner recalls is the intense encounter at the WACA during the first Test of the 2016-17 home series against South Africa. Describing a nerve-wracking 45-minute session with fellow batsman Shaun Marsh, Warner reminisces, “Shaun came down to me and said, ‘I can’t pull him so I don’t know how we’re going to go about facing him’. He put me on my backside, and I think he broke his shoulder as well that game.”

Steyn’s fierce competitiveness and ability to swing the ball back into the left-hander left an indelible mark on Warner. The similarity he draws between Steyn’s technique and Mitchell Starc’s pacey deliveries swinging back into right-handers emphasises the relentless challenge Steyn posed on the field. “He was always a fiery customer who never gave you a smile and never gave you an inch or a sniff on the field,” Warner added.

The Stuart Broad Surprise: A Statistical Anomaly

Despite Dale Steyn earning the top spot in Warner’s list, cricket fans couldn’t help but express surprise over the omission of Stuart Broad. Broad, who has dismissed Warner a staggering 17 times in Test cricket, holds the record for the most dismissals of any bowler against an active batter. This remarkable statistic establishes Warner as Broad’s “sitting bunny,” particularly evident in Test matches and especially in the challenging conditions of the UK.

The Broad-Warner Rivalry: A Test Match Saga

Warner’s vulnerability against Broad, particularly in the UK, has become a cricketing saga in itself. With 17 dismissals, Broad has consistently proven his mastery over the Australian opener, showcasing a unique ability to exploit weaknesses and capitalize on key moments in Test matches. The Broad-Warner rivalry has added an extra layer of anticipation to Test cricket, with fans eagerly anticipating each encounter between the two seasoned players.

David Warner said, “Without doubt it’s Dale Steyn. I go back to the WACA (the first Test of the 2016-17 home series against South Africa) when me and Shaun Marsh had to go out for an ugly 45-minute session. Shaun came down to me and said, ‘I can’t pull him so I don’t know how we’re going to go about facing him’. He put me on my backside and I think he broke his shoulder as well that game.”

“He’s a fierce competitor who swung the ball back into the left-hander, which is similar to Mitchell Starc swinging the ball back into the right-hander at pace. He was always a fiery customer who never gave you a smile and never gave you an inch or a sniff on the field.”
