Australia opener David Warner didn’t hold himself back when responding to the “India team is the best team on paper” and “the best team did not win the World Cup” comments from Mohammad Kaif in the aftermath of the result of the World Cup 2023 final.
Barring a couple of phases, Australia outclassed India in all three departments in the World Cup 2023 final in Ahmedabad, securing the win, and their 6th ODI World Cup trophy, by 6 wickets and with 7 overs to spare.
Despite such a thumping loss, Mohammad Kaif reckoned India were still the best team “on paper” and that Australia were not the “best team” in the competition.
“Congratulations to Australia but I am not ready to accept that the best team won the World Cup. This Indian team has been the best team. They would win so many times playing against the same Australian team, even though they lost today. It was one of those bad days, this happens sometimes,” Mohammad Kaif said on Star Sports after the final.
It does not matter what’s on: David Warner to Kaif

This remark from Mohammad Kaif went viral on social media and came to the attention of David Warner. Warner, who now has won two ODI World Cups, trolled Kaif, saying that it doesn’t matter what is on the paper, and that players need to turn up their best on the biggest day of all – the World Cup final to win the trophy. The left-handed opener also suggested he’d want to play in the 2027 World Cup, too, though he will of age 41 by that time.
“I like MK, issue is it does not matter what’s on paper. At the end of the day you need to perform when it matters. That’s why they call it a final. That’s the day that counts and it can go either way, that’s sports. 2027 here we come,” David Warner tweeted.
