India’s young opener Prithvi Shaw is hailed as one of the most talented batters of this generation, however, he has failed to fire up for Delhi Capitals in the ongoing 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League. Scoring just 47 as an opener in six games, Prithvi has disappointed the fans.
Eventually, Shaw was dropped from the playing XI for the game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad on Monday, April 24, and was used as an Impact Player.
Prithvi Shaw Was Dropped From Playing XI

Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals’ head coach Ricky Ponting said that the team management was forced to drop Prithvi Shaw from the playing XI, considering his poor form. Ponting highlighted how the openers of the other teams have performed better than Shaw in the ongoing season of the league.
Ahead of Delhi Capitals’ game against SunRisers Hyderabad tonight, Ricky Ponting, speaking at the pre-match press conference, pointed out that Shaw has not scored a half-century in the IPL for a long time. He feels that Shaw is a match-winner but he hasn’t been able to match his own shadow in the ongoing season. He said:
“I think it’s 13 games (considering IPL 2022 as well) since Prithvi has made a 50 opening the batting for the Delhi Capitals. There are a lot of other players at the top of the order with other teams that are playing a whole lot better than Prithvi,”
He added: “Prithvi at his absolute best… we know he’s a match-winner. That’s one of the reasons that he’s a retained player because we know if he bats a certain amount of balls, we win about 95% of the games. But so far this season, he hasn’t been able to produce,”
Ricky Ponting Slammed Prithvi
Further, Ponting said that the Capitals made a tough decision to drop Shaw from their starting XI as the team is in a situation where they need to win every game they play from hereon, in order to qualify for the playoffs. He said:
“I think the six games that he played was just over 40-odd runs, so that’s not what we require right now. So it is a tough decision to leave him out but hopefully the team that we put on the park tomorrow can go win another game for us,”
