The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) consolidated their second position in the points table with a thumping 27 runs victory over the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Chepauk. The bottom-placed Delhi Capitals continue to remain at the bottom of the table and now are all but out of the playoffs race.
Delhi Capitals have 8 points in 11 matches with the worst Net Run Rate of all teams, -0.605.
After electing to bat first, CSK got off to a rough start and were 77/4 on a pitch that was assisting spinners. However, Shivam Dube smoked three sixes to snatch back the momentum and the CSK innings had another MS Dhoni finish, 20 off 9, to end up at 167/8.
In the chase, DC had an ever poorer start and were left reeling at 25/3. A run-a-ball 59 partnership between Rossouw and Pandey stopped the wickets flow but was too slow for DC to later catch up and wickets fell continuously, allowing CSK to take a 27-run victory and get closer to sealing their playoff spot.
What about Delhi Capitals though?
Are Delhi Capitals out of playoff race? Can DC still qualify for playoffs in IPL 2023?

Delhi Capitals are virtually knocked out of the playoff race. After the loss to CSK, Delhi Capitals have only 2% mathematical chance of reaching the top 4.
This seems a miraculous task now as they have 8 points in 11 matches and could get to 14 points at max. They will need a spate of other results to go their way and they need to win by big margins in all three matches.

How many points does a team need to qualify for playoffs in IPL 2023?
16 points seem to be the minimum for a team to qualify for playoffs in the 10-team IPL 2023 tournament.
Let’s go back to the 10-team IPL 2022 tournament to see what is the least amount of points for which a team can qualify in the playoffs.
In the 10-team IPL 2022, the team at the 4th spot to reach the playoffs last year – RCB – had 16 points while DC and PBKS with 14 points each just missed the playoffs. A win for both of them would have pipped them over RCB because of their better NRR.
