The Delhi Capitals (DC) are having a season, frankly, as expected following their auction and losing captain and power-hitter Rishabh Pant ahead of the start of the IPL 2023.

David Warner’s DC are languishing at the bottom of the 10-team tournament points table with only 2 wins in 8 matches and and are all but eliminated from the playoff race.

The Delhi Capitals started off the IPL 2023 with 5 straight losses before bouncing back to win 2 matches, against two other struggling teams, KKR and SRH, but lost to SRH in the reverse fixture.

How can Delhi Capitals (DC) still qualify for playoffs in IPL 2023?

Mathematically, DC are still in the playoff race. But with only 2 wins in 8 matches, they need a miracle to win all their remaining 6 games. Even then, 14 points are not likely to be enough for a team to make it into the 4th place.

How many points do a team need for qualifying for playoffs in IPL?

Let’s go back to the 10-team IPL 2022 tournament to see what is the least amount of points for which a team can qualify in the playoffs.

In the 10-team IPL 2022, the team at the 4th spot to enter the playoffs last year – which was RCB – had 16 points while DC and PBKS with 14 points each just missed the playoffs. DC lost their last match but would have gone into the playoffs had they won their last league match because they had a better NRR than RCB in IPL 2022.

At max, Delhi Capitals can reach 14 points, which are unlikely to help them, or any team, as explained above, get into the playoffs. So, it is only a matter of time when DC are mathematically too eliminated from the playoff race.

Delhi Capitals’ next match is against table-toppers Gujarat Titans on May 2.
