Indian bowlers didn’t seem to have answers to questions asked by Latham and Ross Taylor at Wankhede. As Latham’s stunning ton and a handsome innings of 95 by Ross Taylor steered New Zealand to a handsome 6 wicket victory in the first ODI the Indian bowlers especially the two wrist spinners seemed to have an off day at office.
Kuldeep Yadav and Chahal have spun the ball beautifully in the recent games so much so that the duo has been able to supersede the iconic duo of Ashwin and Jadeja. Ashwin and Jadeja, the best spin duo of the world was left high and dry by the magic these young guns have weaved with their wrist spin.
If someone can keep Ashwin and Jadeja away from the squad you got to bow down to their talent then but in the first game against New Zealand which India lost the young duo seemed ineffective. India did not pick wickets in the middle overs and Kuldeep Yadav and Chahal could not create magic this time. Clearly, a pretty hard day at work for them!
While Kuldeep Yadav could only manage 1 wicket Yuzvendra Chahal managed none and this was very unusual seeing their previous performances which outsmarted Ashwin and Jadeja.
Dinesh Karthik who has been a surprise addition in India’s squad against New Zealand said that this game which India lost will prepare the young duo for tougher mental challenges.
In a post-match interview Dinesh Karthik said that this was one of those games which would make the young wrist spinners learn how to stand up to pressure and face the pressure when the wicket does not offer any help. He also said that the wicket was a bit sticky and tough to bat on and that batsman couldn’t really get their timing right.
“These are the kind of games that make you mentally tougher as a bowler. These are the kind of games that are going to help them to stand up to pressure and learn how to handle pressure when the wicket is not helping them,” Dinesh Karthik said at the post-match media conference.
“The team management backed them a lot and they believe in themselves. They are two young guys and they have produced some fantastic spells in the last series and I am sure their confidence is sky high. One game here and there, doesn’t make you a bad bowler,” said Dinesh Karthik.
Well sticky or not the situation for team India in the series is pretty crucial. India needs to win the second ODI at all costs to maintain its chances in 3 match ODI series and hence India needs to fix its problem pretty soon and introspect as to why the bowlers miserably failed to pick wickets regularly.
