Australia all-rounder Ellyse Perry missed out on an Ashes Test century by just one run on a rain-hit first day of the ongoing one-off Test match against England as the visitors reached 328-7 at stumps at Trent Bridge, Nottingham on Thursday.

The Australian cricket team opted to bat first after winning the toss but their openers Beth Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield could not convert their starts before Perry came to the crease. Perry built a valuable 119-run partnership with Tahlia McGrath before spinner Sophie Ecclestone beat McGrath’s defense to bowl her for 61.

Tea was taken early because of the rain and the third session resumed only after a 90-minute delay. England then slowed down the flow of runs as Ecclestone picked up two wickets in an over when she dismissed Jonassen and captain Alyssa Healy, who was bowled for a duck.

Having smashed 15 boundaries, Parry looked all set for her third century when England debutant Lauren Filer dismissed the Australian into a drive when she was on 99.

Perry connected the ball well but it flew off the outside edge and landed straight into the hands of Nat Sciver-Brunt at gully. It was a heartbreak for Perry as she walked back to the pavilion on 99 runs.

Meanwhile, later, Perry expressed her disappointment about missing the century by just 1 run. She said:

“It was nice to contribute,” she added. “It was nice to be a part of a few really good partnerships, particularly that one with TMac [McGrath]. It’s just like any other time to get out. It’s a bit of a bummer, but gosh, the game definitely goes on, and life goes on for sure.”
