ENG VS NZ

England kicked off their ODI World Cup title defense in World Cup 2023 in the ENG vs NZ match by setting a world record with the bat. Given how they have revolutionized white-ball batting, it is apt that they have created this ODI record which has never happened before today, in either men’s or women’s ODIs.

Batting first, England finished with 382/9 in their quota of 50 overs. Interestingly, all 11 members of the side got into double digits today, making this a first-time-ever instance of 11 players scoring at least 10 runs in an ODI innings in men’s and women’s ODI.

Although England lost their wickets regularly, they kept going hard as that is their template. And that goes down to their tailenders as well. Number 10 batsman Adil Rashid scored 15 runs and Number 11 batsman Mark Wood scored 13 runs.

It was also confirmed by statisticians that this is the first instance of all 11 members of a team scoring into double digits in ODI cricket!

“One innings into the World Cup, and already a sensational piece of planet-shattering history – all 11 England players make double figures, the first time any team has done so in ODIs (men’s & women’s)” tweeted TMS cricket statistician Andy Zaltzman.

Another twitter user wrote “4,658 ODI matches in history so far.

First time ever all the 11 batters of a team scored runs in double digits.”

Talking about the match, Tom Latham had won the toss and elected to field first. Joe Root finished as England’s top-scorer in their innings with 77 runs in 86 balls.

ENG vs NZ teams:

England (Playing XI): Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler(w/c), Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood

New Zealand (Playing XI): Devon Conway, Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham(w/c), Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner, James Neesham, Matt Henry, Trent Boult

Glenn Phillips, who took two wickets including that of  Root, said “Brilliant, obviously they got off to a flyer, but our spinners and seamers in the middle overs brought us back in the game, restricting them to 280 was pleasing. When Stokes was rested, one left-hander was taken out, but Latham used his other options well. They played really well, the wicket is going to get better in the second innings. They bat so deep, keeping them to a total of under 300, it was a great effort.”
