Explained: What Is Daisy Cutter In Cricket?

Explained: What Is Daisy Cutter In Cricket? – Cricket is full of special deliveries that keep batsmen on their toes. The yorker, bowled right at the batsman’s feet, aims to disrupt the stumps or cramp the batter’s space. The bouncer surprises with its height, making the batsman duck or hook.

Spinners bring their own magic with the googly, which turns the opposite way than expected. Then there’s the slower ball, a pacer’s trick to deceive the batsman with reduced speed. Each type of delivery adds variety and strategy, making cricket not just a battle of skills but also a mental game.

Explained: What Is Daisy Cutter In Cricket?

The daisy cutter in cricket is a deceptive delivery that barely bounces after hitting the pitch. Bowlers use it to surprise batsmen expecting a normal bounce. This delivery skids low, making it difficult for the batsman to play a proper shot. It’s especially effective on uneven pitches where the ball can stay low unpredictably.

While rare, the daisy cutter can catch batsmen off guard, leading to their dismissal. This tricky delivery adds another layer to a bowler’s arsenal, keeping the batsman guessing and making the game more exciting. It’s all about precision and surprise.

During the first Test between England and Sri Lanka at Manchester, Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Chandimal faced a tricky delivery on Day 1. England’s Shoaib Bashir bowled a back-of-a-length ball outside the off stump that sharply turned in. The delivery was unusual because it barely bounced after pitching.

It stayed so low that it hit Chandimal near his ankle, giving him no time to adjust. Despite reviewing the decision, Chandimal had to depart. The delivery had all the hallmarks of a classic daisy cutter, catching the batsman off guard and showcasing Bashir’s skill.
