At a distance Virat Singh looks like a combination of two great cricketers, he shares his name with the current Indian captain and shares his state with the former Indian captain.
Virat Singh is a 22-year-old left-handed batsman from Jharkhand. The Jamshedpur born player first burst onto the higher stage when he started playing U19 cricket for Jharkhand in 2012-13 Vinoo Mankad trophy. He was only 14 then and managed to score 152 runs in five outings. After being selected in the east zone BCCI interzonal tournament, Virat’s 78 against Central zone was the highest individual score for his team. Next was Cooch Behar trophy, where this 15-year-old captained his team. Singh finished the Cooch Behar tournament with 508 runs in five matches which included two centuries.
The now SRH player showed sheer consistency in the Vijay Hazare cup 2014. His contributions helped Jharkhand to the semi-finals of the tournament. However, Virat’s Mushtaq Ali debut was a flop as he managed only 90 runs in seven games with 40 being his highest score. He made his first-class debut simultaneously, scoring a century in his very second match. Then Singh made Deodhar trophy a stepping stone to get in the U19 national team but a string of poor scores failed him.
Now are the days of IPL and Virat Singh has been signed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 1.9 crore and is set to make an international level debut in 2020. During an interview with sportswizi.com Virat said, “Well, I was disappointed when I wasn’t picked in the IPL but no point looking back. Working hard and preparations are on for the next season.
I might go to England as well to play some club cricket over there. I hope it improves my game and when I return I return as a much better player.”
He may want to make a statement in front of the players he idealized while growing up and this IPL will be the best opportunity to do the same.
