Rohit Sharma had a rough outing in the third and final T20I of the series against Sri Lanka in Dharamsala as he was dismissed for 5 runs off 9 balls in the run chase of 147. He never looked settled at the crease and in the end gave it away with a rash shot to Dushmantha Chameera, who has now dismissed Sharma six times in T20Is.

Sharma had a new opening partner in Sanju Samson as Ishan Kishan was ruled out due to the hit on the head he sustained during the second T20I. Sharma faced his second ball from left-armer Binura Fernando. An inswinging yorker at Fernando’s pace allowed Sharma to bring his bat down in time and with the quick outfield, it raced away for four.

Fernando though came back strongly conceding just 1 run in the next three balls, including providing a chance of Sharma’s dismissal on the last ball of the first over. Knowing that Fernando will look for the inswinging yorker again, Rohit stepped out and lobbed the ball down however didn’t have the power on it as it lobbed towards Shanaka at mid-off.

The Sri Lankan skipper dove forward and even got his hands under the ball but couldn’t manage to keep it grabbed and spilt the catch giving the Indian captain a reprieve. Rohit, however, couldn’t make much of the life. He dotted out first three balls of the second over, bowled by Chameera, including missing a slash.

With the threat of Chameera playing on his mind, even more than the scratchy start he had had, Sharma went for a big pull to a length ball that on which he couldn’t generate timing courtesy of the extra pace of Chameera as the ball hurried on him. It took the upper part of the bat and went high in the air, giving the mid-off fielder, Karunaratne, ample of time to settle under the ball and take a comfortable catch.

Netizens were out with their guns after Rohit’s failure on Sunday. Here, look at some of the reactions:

The man, who was known for scoring a mountain of runs at the Eden Gardens, did not score even a single half-century in 3 matches. The man who was known to tear apart SL’s bowling, is struggling against them. Not Kohli but I think Rohit Sharma’s career is nearing its end. #INDvSL

Rohit Sharma is going to find it very tough to sustain his form and captaincy in all 3 formats. He isn’t Kohli of the 2016–19 Period.
