Fans React After India’s Heartbreaking Defeat In CWG 2022 Final Vs Australia: Australian women’s cricket team continue their winning juggernaut and emerges out victorious in the final of the Commonwealth Games 2022, Birmingham, defeating India by a slender margin of 9 runs.
It was a game of multiple twists and turns, but eventually, Australia overcame a valiant effort from India captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who smashed 65 off 43 runs in the chase of the target of 162.
India had put on a clinical performance in the field today, taking a couple of stunning catches, affecting a couple of sharp run-outs and there was a quick stumping by Taniya Bhatia as well.
India were given a major confidence boost when Renuka Singh dismissed opener Alyssa Healy in the third over. But the other opener, Beth Mooney and Meg Lanning, rode Australia’s chariot on with a 74-run stand from 47 balls with Mooney (61 off 41 balls) bringing up her fifty and Lanning scoring 36 off 26.
India then made several inroads, but Ashleigh Gardner (25 off 15) and Rachael Haynes (18 off 10) ensured that Australia reach a competitive total of 161, which, on the pitch that wore as it was the second game of the day on it and would prove enough as Indian batters buckled under the pressure of the big game.
India’s hero from the semi-final, Smriti Mandhana, was dismissed cheaply today for only 6 runs and so was Shafali Verma, for 11 runs, with India in deep waters at 22/2.
Then came Harmanpreet ‘Thor’ wielding her hammer to all parts of Edgbaston and giving the indomitable Aussies cause of worry, and a rewind of her epic knock from the 2017 World Cup semis.
At the other end, she had the support of Jemimah Rodrigues who finished with run-a-ball 33, who, in hindsight, could have batted a bit more faster, and the pair added 96 runs in 71 balls in which Kaur thumped 63 off 40. She walloped 7 fours and 2 sixes in her stay, but at the dismissal of both the set batters, India collapsed – and collapsed till the end.
From a strong position of 118/2, India went down to 121/5, and Australia pounced on that seize of momentum to bowl India out on 152.
