Farokh Engineer Reacts To Virat Kohli’s Claims About Being In Depression

Farokh Engineer Reacts To Virat Kohli’s Claims About Being In Depression: The Indian skipper Virat Kohli recently left everyone in shock after he revealed that he suffered depression during India’s 2014 tour to England. For the unversed, Virat was going through a rough patch during that time, with successive low-scores in his kitty during the five Tests, scoring only 134 runs at 13.40.

However, later in that year itself, Virat made a stunning comeback and has been going strong ever since. Recently, in an interview, when Virat was asked if he had suffered from depression, he had said: “Yes, I did”. He added: “…it’s not a great feeling to wake up knowing that you won’t be able to score runs and I think all batsmen have felt that at some stage that you are not in control of anything at all.”

Virat’s claims of going through depression stunned many and several cricketers came out talking about him. The latest one to talk about the same is the former Indian cricketer Farokh Engineer, who has responded to his claims.

Recently, in an interview, Farokh asked Virat how could he go through so much with a lovely wife by his side. He said:

“How can you be depressed when you have such a lovely wife? “He’s got a child. He’s got every reason to be thankful to God,”

He added:

“Depression is more in the western world. They talk about it more. But the mind is such a thing that you can never know. Mind is a dreadful thing. We (Indians) have greater strength to fight the demons in our body. We have our ups and downs. But we have got the mental strength to fight. And fight harder and play better, which maybe people like (Marcus) Trescothick and others don’t have.”

Well, Engineer shared a rather different take on this matter and he was being factually wrong as well. Virat was unmarried in 2014, the time when he suffered depression.

Meanwhile, earlier legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar had lauded Virat for sharing his experience and stressing the importance of talking about depression and mental health. Sachin wrote:

“@imVkohli, proud of your success & decision to share such personal experiences. These days youngsters are constantly judged on social media. Thousands speak about them but not to them. We need to be able to listen to them and help them flourish.”
