Shubman Gill had a forgettable return to T20Is as he was dismissed for a 2-ball duck against South Africa in the 2nd T20I on Tuesday in Gqeberha.

The first T20I between India and South Africa in Durban was washed out on Sunday. On Tuesday, both teams locked horns in the 2nd T20I at St George’s Park in Gqeberha.

Shubman Gill, who last played a T20 match in August, slotted back right into India’s line-up as an opener. While it is believed that Gill is ahead in the pecking order for the opening spot, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad have made strong cases with their respective batting styles. While Jaiswal is all intent from the start of his innings, Gaikwad likes to take his time before exploding. Gill oscillates in between these two styles of batting in T20 cricket.

Shubman Gill is competing with Jaiswal, Gaikwad, and even Ishan Kishan for an opener’s spot should Rohit Sharma make his return to the T20I side next year.

Talking about today’s dismissal, Shubman Gill barely got to spend time in the middle. With rain having eased just before the toss, there was movement available for the pacers and Lizaad Williams made good use of it by nipping back a length delivery. Gill wanted to play it on the leg side but failed to get any bat on the ball. The ball struck him on his front pad and he was given out lbw by the on-field umpire.

Even as Gill went upstairs with a review, Hawkeye showed three reds, and the opener had to walk back to the dressing room.
