Gautam Gambhir Backs Yashasvi Jaiswal For T20 World Cup 2024

Gautam Gambhir Backs Yashasvi Jaiswal For T20 World Cup 2024: Gautam Gambhir, a former Indian opener, has made a strong case for the inclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal in India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024. However, he cautioned selectors against rushing players into the national team based solely on their Indian Premier League (IPL) performance. This comes in the wake of Jaiswal’s standout displays in the IPL and his recent debut Test century against the West Indies.

Firstly, Jaiswal’s commendable achievements in IPL 2023 have caught everyone’s attention. His superb form for Rajasthan Royals combined with consistent performances in domestic cricket sets him apart from his contemporaries. Moreover, scoring a century in his Test debut has undoubtedly strengthened his case for national selection.

Notably, Jaiswal became the first player to score a double century and a century in the same match for the Rest of India against Madhya Pradesh. He followed this remarkable achievement by scoring 625 runs in just 14 IPL games, which included a sensational century.

However, Gambhir urges caution when elevating players based solely on IPL performances. Speaking to News18, he said, “In India, we take the two months of IPL so seriously that anyone who performs well gets added to the Indian team.” He emphasizes that Jaiswal’s double hundreds in domestic cricket, both in First Class and One-Day matches, deserve equal recognition.

While discussing promising talents, Gambhir brought up Rinku Singh. Singh’s journey is inspiring, and he’s had some strong performances. But Gambhir insists that a single good season isn’t enough to warrant national selection. He believes Singh should demonstrate consistency in domestic cricket first.

“Let Rinku score runs in the domestic season and then return to the IPL and score runs again,” Gambhir proposed. If Singh can maintain this consistency, only then should selectors consider adding him to the Indian team, according to Gambhir.

To sum up, Gambhir’s argument centres on valuing domestic performance alongside IPL success when considering national selection. As for Jaiswal, his stellar performance across multiple platforms seems to have secured him a well-deserved endorsement from the former opener. However, only time will tell if Jaiswal gets his opportunity to shine in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
