Gautam Gambhir needs to go back to basics

Picking Gautam Gambhir for the Test series against England (in England) was a very brave move by the Indian selectors, as Gambhir didn’t do anything spectacular in the domestic season to earn this call. Gambhir was picked only on the basis of “experience” but it didn’t work and his comeback went horribly wrong in England.

Gambhir managed to score just 25 runs in 4 innings at an average of 6.25. Gambhir’s return to the Test side after nearly 30 months, went wrong after he was dismissed for scores of 0, 3, 4 and 18 in the final two matches in England.

Now, Gambhir knows that the only way he can make a comeback is, to go back to the basics and start from the scratch. While speaking to ESPNCRICINFO, Gambhir said that he is still very hopeful about his comeback and he’s eyeing the domestic season to get back into the form and make a comeback.

“The important thing is to keep scoring runs. We have a big domestic season coming up. If the runs come, the technical things people keep talking about can be taken care of. Stay in the present, keep scoring runs and see where it goes,” Gambhir told ESPNCRICINFO.

Gambhir’s bad-patch is a combined result of some technical flaws and low confidence. In the last two and a half years, Gambhir has struggled against fast bowling. He has no idea where his off-stump is, and consequently, he has developed a habit of poking at everything that is pitched outside the off-stump. Gambhir’s longish bad-patch has clearly had a very negative impact on his confidence, and this is one of the major reason behind his consistent failures.

Gambhir is still very young and there’s a lot of cricket left in him. This domestic season will be a make or break season for Gautam Gambhir.
