Gautam Gambhir Takes Yet Another Subtle Dig At MS Dhoni

Gautam Gambhir Takes Yet Another Subtle Dig At MS Dhoni: Whenever we talk about the final of ICC World Cup 2011, the memories of MS Dhoni hitting that winning six pops up in our minds. It is arguably the first memory that flashes in everyone’s minds.

However, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir feels that it is time that the Indian cricket fraternity and fans move beyond that win. Gambhir had contributed 97 runs in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka to help India win the trophy. However, Dhoni being the skipper of that Indian team that won the cup draws the most applauds whenever the match is talked about.

However, Gambhir feels that the time has come for the Indian team to win their next world cup trophy. Gambhir’s statements came on the 10th anniversary of India’s World Cup triumph on April 2, 2011.

He also said that it was a team effort and not just the effort of one individual. He asserted that the fans need to see the contributions of others as well. He said:

“Do you think that only one individual won us the World Cup? If one individual could have won the World Cup, then India could have won all the World Cups till now. Unfortunately, in India, it’s only about worshipping certain individuals. I’ve never believed in that. In a team sport, individuals have no place. It’s all about contributions”

Furthermore, Gambhir put focus on the performances and contributions of Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar etc. He also added that if Dhoni’s one six won India the World Cup, Yuvi’s six-sixes would’ve won six World Cups to India. He said:

Can you forget Zaheer Khan’s contribution? His first spell in the final, where he bowled three successive maidens? Can you forget what Yuvraj Singh did against Australia? Or for that matter, Sachin Tendulkar’s hundred against South Africa? Why do we keep remembering about one six? If one six can win you the World Cup, then I think Yuvraj Singh should have won six World Cups for India, because he hit six sixes in an over (against England in 2007 World T20 at Durban). No one talks about Yuvraj. He was the ‘Man of the Tournament’ in the 2007 (officially, Shahid Afridi was) & the 2011 World Cups. And we keep talking about that one six.”
