Gautam Gambhir, the former India opener, has been appointed as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. In his first series, India has won the T20I series against Sri Lanka by 3-0. Currently, India are playing against Sri Lanka in the ODI series and trailing by 1-0 with one game to play.
Meanwhile, Gambhir’s childhood coach, Sanjay Bhardwaj, talked about Gauti and his mindset. Gambhir’s childhood coach described him as still being innocent and without malice, similar to a 12-year-old child. He explained that although people might see Gambhir as arrogant, it’s actually his determined attitude towards winning. The coach recalled how Gambhir used to cry after losing matches during practice sessions because he hated losing, even as a kid. This strong personality has made him a serious and focused person.
“Even today he is like an innocent kid. He has no malice. He is like a 12-year-old kid. People think he is arrogant, but that is his attitude towards winning. I used to make him play matches after nets and he would cry after losing matches. He did not like losing even back then. So, a person with a true personality like him will obviously remain serious,” Bhardwaj said while speaking to 2018 Under-19 World Cup winner Manjot Kalra’s show on YouTube.

Bhardwaj stated that Gautam Gambhir doesn’t focus on technical skills, as players at that level already possess strong technical abilities. Instead, Gambhir concentrates on tactics. His role is to uplift players’ morale and boost their confidence, especially if they have doubts about themselves.
“Gautam Gambhir will not go after the technical aspects. Because at that level, there is not need for technical improvement. You are there because you are good enough technically. What Gambhir will work on is the tactical aspects. Gambhir’s job will be to boost morale and inject confidence into a player who may not to too sure about himself,” added Bhardwaj.
