South Africa has been caught in a strange song of injuries ever since their encounters with India started. One after the other the star players got ruled out and that’s how a young Aiden Markram became the interim skipper for South Africa.
India has handed over some handsome defeats to South Africa having won the ODI series 5-1. Aiden Markram was clearly seen lacking both experience and runs. Aiden Markram in the ODI series has scores of 8, 32, 22, 32 and 24. The 23 year old Markram got captaincy even though he isn’t a regular guy to feature for South Africa.
Smith Slams The Decision To Make Markram The Captain
The former South African skipper, Graeme Smith is totally not impressed with the move to give the burden of captaincy to Aiden Markram. Smith feels that rather than giving the captaincy he should have got runs to his name and cemented his place. Here’s what Smith said
“Probably coming from me that doesn’t make sense because I got given the job at a very young age. I think it was an interim thing, not a full-time thing. I would have rather have had him find his place, find his feet within the one-day set-up, try and get runs behind him.”
Smith further questioned Markram’s leadership skills and added

“What was disappointing for me was that I don’t think the other senior players stepped up around him – the Amlas, Duminys, Millers, those guys just never got it going from a performance perspective, an intensity perspective. They needed to get behind and lead the way almost.”
