World Cup-winning bowler Harbhajan Singh has backed Sanju Samson to be the future of the Indian cricket team if he learns from his mistakes.

Despite an underwhelming season for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2020, Sanju Samson earned a place in India’s T20 squad for Australia because of his initial IPL brilliance. However, Sanju Samson failed to deliver the best of his capabilities, once again failing to grab the opportunity given by team India during the just concluded 3-match T20I series. In the three-match, he could only score 48 runs.

Talking about Sanju Samson, Harbhajan Singh claimed that Sanju got a chance to bat at number 4, a spot which is currently not locked by either Shreyas Iyer or Manish Pandey. He pointed out that currently Samson is at an early stage of his international career.

For the unversed, not just wicket-keepers including Ishan Kishan and Rishabh Pant are giving tough competition to Sanju Samson but there are many batsmen looking to grab an opportunity at number 4. Harbhajan feels that the youngster has got potential and quality to win the series for India, therefore should make full use of every opportunity he gets.He said:

“Sanju has got the opportunity to bat at No. 4. He is still on his first or second tour, he will learn. We know that he has got the potential and India won the series.”

He added:

“These guys will be the future of Indian cricket. You know if they will not mistakes, they will not learn. I am sure Sanju Samson with the quality he has, is gonna learn and get better from here.”

Further, Harbhajan Singh also reckoned that if Sanju Samson doesn’t learn from his mistakes or starts making an impact with his performances, then he is likely to be replaced. Harbhajan feels that Samson needs to get better at learning from his mistakes and grab the opportunities he gets in the future. He said:

“If he will not learn obviously someone else will come and take that slot. Because no.4 is a very important slot. If you have got the opportunity, you have to seal it. If not on this tour but next tour, you have to come better prepared and make sure you make it count,”
