Former India off-spinner and currently a Member of the Rajya Sabha from Punjab, Harbhajan Singh has demanded the death penalty for the perpetrators of the horrific crime committed in the state of Manipur on two women.
In the past couple of days, a video revealing two women from the Kuki-Zomi community being paraded naked and sexually assaulted by a mob of men went viral on social media, bringing to light an incident that had taken place in the state of Manipur about two months ago, when violence first started.
A senior police official has confirmed, according to The Indian Express, that this incident happened on May 4 in Thoubal district and that a FIR was launched on May 18 in Kangpokpi district. The FIR filed two months ago is on charges including abduction, gangrape, and murder against “unknown armed miscreants”. However, reportedly there have not been any arrests so far.
I am numb with rage: Harbhajan Singh

As soon as the video went viral on social media, many prominent Indian figures came out demanding the strictest action against those men. Among the few former cricketers who commented on this issue was former off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who had also entered politics last year by becoming a Rajya Sabha Member from Punjab state.
Harbhajan demanded the death penalty for the criminals. He also said it was a matter of great shame for us as human beings that such an act was committed in the first place.
“If I say I am angry, it’s an understatement. I am numb with rage. I am ashamed today after what happened in Manipur. If the perpetrators of this ghastly crime aren’t brought to the book and handed capital punishment, we should stop calling ourselves human. It makes me sick that this has happened. Enough is Enough. Govt MUST act. #Manipur #Manipur_Violence,” Harbhajan Singh tweeted.
