India’s limited-overs vice-captain, Hardik Pandya, finds himself sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained during India’s 4th game in the ODI World Cup 2023 against Bangladesh in Pune. The initial prognosis hinted at a swift return for the dynamic all-rounder, with hopes he would feature in the knockout games. However, the gravity of the injury became apparent, forcing him out of the World Cup and subsequent series against Australia. As fans eagerly awaited his return, recent developments indicate a prolonged absence, reshaping the trajectory of Pandya’s comeback.

Contrary to earlier reports suggesting a return in the 3-game T20 series against Afghanistan in January, sources from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) reveal an extended hiatus for Pandya. This unforeseen setback has prompted the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the NCA to adopt a meticulous approach to ensure the all-rounder’s seamless return and sustained high performance.

In preparation for upcoming Twenty20 World Cups, the BCCI and the NCA have collaborated on an intensive 18-week high-performance plan tailored specifically for Hardik Pandya. This strategic initiative, as reported, aims to address not only the physical aspects of his recovery but also emphasizes workload management and long-term goals.

The essence of workload management takes centre stage in Pandya’s recovery journey. The NCA source emphasizes that this meticulous approach isn’t a novelty, citing similar programs for players like Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah, and KL Rahul during their respective injury layoffs. The emphasis is on setting long-term goals and ensuring endurance levels remain optimal, vital for the demands of T20 cricket.

The success of such programs is underscored by the individualized focus on player needs. KL Rahul’s program factored in the challenges of wicket-keeping and subcontinent heat, ensuring a comprehensive recovery. Similarly, Jasprit Bumrah’s return was carefully orchestrated, easing him back into action with Ireland T20Is before his full-fledged participation in the Asia Cup.

“We speak of workload management. This is precisely what it is all about. Is there a doubt on his ability as a T20 cricketer? No. What we rather need is setting long-term goals and ensuring endurance levels remain up to the mark,” a source told.

“It is not something new. Shreyas, Bumrah and KL underwent similar programmes during their long injury layoffs and the routine is designed keeping the next assignments in mind. Say for KL, wicket-keeping, subcontinent heat and everything was taken into account. Similarly, Bumrah was eased into cricket with Ireland T20Is before he went full throttle in the Asia Cup,” the source added.

As the cricketing world eagerly anticipates the Twenty20 World Cup in June 2024, slated to be held in the United States and the Caribbean, the BCCI and the NCA remain committed to fortifying Pandya’s fitness and skill set. The broader horizon includes the subsequent hosting of the tournament in India in 2026. The emphasis on meticulous planning reflects not only on Pandya’s current setback but also the foresight to ensure sustained excellence in the future.
