Harsha Bhogle Posted A Hilarious Tweet On Jonny Bairstow’s Controversial Run-Out: The debate on the ‘spirit of cricket’ has once again reignited after the controversial run-out of Jonny Bairstow implemented by Australian keeper Alex Carey during the recently-concluded second Test match of the Ashes 2023 at the iconic Lord’s. Bairstow’s dismissal has become one of the most discussed topics in the cricket fraternity lately.

For the unversed, when Jonny Bairstow was on 10, he ducked a bouncer from Cameron Green which went straight to Alex Carey. Bairstow, assuming that the ball is dead, started walking towards the middle of the pitch to have a chat with skipper Ben Stokes. However, Carey immediately grabbed the chance and threw the ball to the stumps, and appealed for a run-out. Third umpire Marais Erasmus immediately gave this out.

Meanwhile, the run-out has sparked a major controversy, which has led to a full-fledged debate on the ‘Spirit Of Cricket’. Several former cricketers from England and Australia are taking shots at each other over the matter. The moment is still buzzing on social media and the latest one to join the bandwagon is popular Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle.

Harsha Bhogle, who is hailed as the ‘voice of cricket in India, has come up with a hilarious Tweet on Jonny Bairstow’s controversial run-out. In his tweet, he highlighted the ‘hypocrisy’ of certain players when it comes to ‘Laws’ of cricket and ‘spirit’ of cricket. He wrote:

“A childhood friend of mine, a professor in the US has, I think, got it absolutely right on this Bairstow issue:
“I figured it out!!!! I cracked the Hypocrisy code
You have to invoke the ‘Laws’ of Cricket when the decision is ‘IN your favour’
You have to invoke the ‘Spirit’ of Cricket when the decision is ‘NOT in your favour'”

What does the rule say?

As per the MCC’s Laws of Cricket, particularly law 20.1.2, the ball is considered dead when both the fielding side and the batter at the wicket no longer regard it as in play. However, in this particular case, the fielding side considered the ball to still be in play and dismissed Bairstow.
