The Mohali ODI was a test of character for Rohit Sharma. The stand in captain for India had to retain India’s chances in the series at any cost after the Dharamshala debacle.
India once again lost the toss and the conditions seemed pretty similar to Dharamshala. But the captain, Rohit Sharma had different plans today.
India started cautiously as Dhawan and Rohit successfully saw off the new ball. While Dhawan played the role of the aggressor initially, Rohit just stayed calm and stitched his innings cautiously. But after Dhawan got out after a handsome half century, Rohit Sharma took the onus of getting India to a mammoth total.
Rohit took 112 balls for 6th ODI century of his this year. Then what happened was nothing less than a storm. It was the Rohit Sharma storm that roared in Mohali then and the Lankan lions had now answers. Rohit Sharma went on to score a double hundred, the third double ton for Rohit Sharma in ODIs. can you believe it?
This double ton was the most social of all
This double century of Rohit Sharma was special by two means. This splendid double century came on the day of his second marriage anniversary and the best part was that this was his first double ton as being the captain for India.
Rohit now has the second highest score in an ODI inning by a captain and this is what makes it so special.
On top of the list is Virender Sehwag. Although he had a very short stint with captaincy but seems like he will hold this record for long. Sehwag was captaining the side when he played a staggering knock of 219 in 2011.
With this he did not only made the highest individual ODI score of them but also broke Jayasuriya’s record of most runs in an ODI by a captain.
Rohit Sharma went passed Jayasuriya’s tally of 189 to become second on the list. Sachin Tendulkar with a score of 186 and Kapil Dev with the memorable knock of 175 are also on the list of top scores by a captain. Let’s see if Kohli can ever surpass all of these.
