The Indian cricket team is currently locking its horns with South Africa in the ongoing 3-match Test series in Centurion. Following this, team India will lock horns with Proteas in a 3-match ODI series. However, the Indian squad for the upcoming 3-match ODI series is yet to be announced by the BCCI.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was all set to announce the squad for the ODI series against South Africa, however, the meeting has been adjourned due to uncertainty over the fitness of Rohit Sharma.
Notably, India’s new ODI skipper Rohit Sharma sustained a hamstring injury before the start of the Test series against South Africa. Rohit, who was also promoted as the vice-captain in the Test format, was directly ruled out of the red ball series, however, he is still expected to take part in the upcoming ODI series, which will be his first assignment as the full-time white-ball skipper of team India.
As per the sources, the Indian selectors want to give every possible chance to Rohit Sharma to regain his fitness, and hence the announcement of India’s squad for the ODI series has been delayed. The reports also suggest that the team India’s physio is yet to receive a complete fitness report of Rohit Sharma. The selection meeting has been pushed back to January 1 following the issue of Rohit’s fitness.
Meanwhile, if Rohit Sharma fails to clear the standard of fitness for the selection, KL Rahul will be taking the charge of captaincy for the 3-match ODI series.
The three-match ODI series is scheduled to kickstart from 19th January. The second fixture is scheduled for 21st January while the final will be played on 23rd January in Cape Town.
