“Hitman Is Back” – Fans Celebrated Rohit Sharma’s Exciting Cameo

There was the intent. There was the venting out of his frustrations as after each boundary – struck disdainfully, which is a bit unlike Rohit Sharma, the Mumbai Indians‘ skipper’s expressions told the story of how he’d been feeling, again and again – after their season’s first match – unable to provide a good start to his side.

Rohit Sharma was a man possessed today as almost single-handedly nailed down the powerplay taking MI to 63/0 against one of the best bowling attacks in the tournament of Gujarat Titans.

In the 9 previous innings, he registered 5 scores of 10 or less. And while in the other four, he had gone past 25 but wasn’t as fluent as he looked today; in fact, this was perhaps his most fluent knock in the past two seasons.

The problem with Rohit Sharma this season so far wasn’t just his lack of a big score – that didn’t happen today either – it was the lack of stability, assuredness, and clarity on which he’s built an incredible international career.

Today, don’t look at the runs he scores – 43 off 28 balls – or the strike rate he managed – 153, enough to give MI a desired start on a flat surface – but look at each of the strokes, not just boundaries, but even the defences. Rohit middled almost everything, until he was dismissed with a shocking failed attempt of a reverse sweep against the best T20 spinner in the world, Rashid Khan.

Sharma defended the in-form Mohammed Shami’s first over solidly before taking down Alzarri Joseph – a boundary over extra cover, a guided outside edge towards thirdman, and completed the over with a trademark pull shot sixer.

Even Shami then was treated smartly, a lap six over fine leg using Shami’s pace and the short boundary. Joseph came for another round and was again sent for couple of fours.

Forced by this mauling of his pacers, Hardik Pandya brought on his trump card, Rashid Khan. MI had planned well as Rashid was taken care of by Ishan Kishan who played two crispy boundaries messing with Pandya’s plans. The GT skipper got his fastest bowler, Lockie Ferguson, who was thumped for a boundary by each of the openers.

This entertainment ended soon after the powerplay with Rashid taking out the MI captain. But it provided loads of enjoyment to the fans.

Social media was in a celebration mood, hailing the return to form of the Indian captain.

Here are some of the best reactions to Rohit Sharma’s thunderous return-to-form knock:
