The T20 World Cup 2022 will be played in Australia, from October 16 to November 13. This is the second of the back-to-back T20 World Cups in consecutive years, after the 2021 edition was played in the UAE, where Australia clinched their maiden world title in this format.
Aaron Finch’s side now will have a great opportunity to become the first team to win two consecutive T20 World Cups as they will be playing at home in the upcoming what will be the 8th edition of the competition.
How much prize money will the winners of T20 World Cup 2022 get?
Well, at the moment it is unclear how much amount will the winners, runner-ups and teams will get for playing during the T20 World Cup 2022.
However, notably, we have the specific figures of the prize money distributed at last year’s event, which was announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) itself prior to the tournament in the UAE.
Last year, the title-winning team – Australia – were awarded a whopping $1.6 million, while the runners-up – New Zealand – also took home a bumper figure – $800,000.
Further, $400,000 were given to each of the two losing semi-finalists, which were Pakistan and England.
Will other teams also get money from ICC?
The T20 World Cup 2022 will follow the same format as it did last year. First, a Preliminary round will be played between 8 teams in two groups of 4, from which the top two teams from each of the Preliminary round groups will proceed to the Super 12, for which 8 teams have already qualified. Former champions West Indies and Sri Lanka are now part of the Preliminary round having failed to qualify for the Super 12 directly.
There are two groups of 6 teams each in the Super 12 round; the top two teams from each group will proceed to the semi-finals. The two finalists will then battle it out in the Final on November 13 at the iconic MCG.
Just like last year’s tournament, there will be rewards for each victory in the Super 12 and the Round 1 stage. In the 2021 T20 World Cup, the ICC awarded a bonus amount of $40,000 for every win during the Super 12 and Round 1 stage.
There are 30 matches in the Super 12 phase and 12 matches during the Round 1 stage – summing up to a total amount of $1,200,000 and $480,000 respectively to be distributed by the governing body.
There will be awards for the losing out teams as well: In 2021, the four teams which were knocked out during Round 1 received $40,000 each, while the teams who were knocked out in the Super 12 stage were awarded $70,000 each.
