IND vs AUS: Cricket fans in Mohali, Punjab, India, flocked to the IS Bindra Stadium to see the first of three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) between India and Australia. In Rohit Sharma’s absence, KL Rahul led the Indian squad and won the toss, opting to bowl first and set the scene for an exciting match.
KL Rahul’s choice to bowl first in Mohali was a calculated one made to take advantage of the day’s early conditions. The surface had a greenish hue that would help the seam bowlers. Rahul had faith in his bowlers and a strategy to limit the Australian batting order.
David Warner, Australia’s veteran opener, walked out to the crease to start the innings. Warner’s deft timing and precise strokes instantly put the Indian bowlers under strain. He batted magnificently, scoring 52 runs off of 53 balls (6 fours, 2 sixes). Warner’s 29th half-century in ODIs demonstrates his persistent excellence at the highest level.
Australian batsman Steve Smith also entered the fray, showcasing his traditional batting approach. He batted for 48 balls and was eventually out, dismissed by a delivery from the amazing Mohammed Shami. All game long, Shami’s mastery of bowling was on full display.
The Australian total was raised to 276 runs with the aggressive performances of Australian skipper Pat Cummins, who scored 21 runs in nine balls (including two fours and a six). The rapid runs scored by Cummins helped set a challenging goal for the Indian team.
Mohammed Shami, who was left off the starting lineup for the Asia Cup 2023, impressed in Mohali. In his 10 overs, he held Australia to only 51 runs while claiming five key wickets. Shami’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, and he rightly received high praise for his efforts.

In addition to this astounding achievement, Shami also created history by being the first bowler to take five wickets at Mohali, a venue notorious for its favourable batting conditions. The Australian batters had a hard time dealing with his outstanding ability to swing the ball in both directions and produce accurate yorkers.
Cricketers everywhere were eager to praise Mohammed Shami for his outstanding showing. On Twitter, former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif gushed, “Mohammed Shami is easily the world’s most underrated pacer. To me he is a world Cup hero.. bhai ko halke mein mat lena. Congrats on fifer.”
