Test cricket between India and Australia is a rivalry that goes back to 1947 when India first played their first test match against Australia. Since then, India and Australia have played 102 Test matches till 2021, with the following results:

  • India won 25 Tests
  • There were 36 draws
  • No Test matches ended in a tie.

The early years of the rivalry were dominated by Australia, who won the first five test series played between the two sides. India’s first test win against Australia came in the 1959-60 series, in which they won their first ever test match on home soil. However, Australia regained their dominance in the following years, winning six consecutive series between 1967 and 1977.

In the 1980s and 1990s, India started to show signs of improvement and started winning more matches against Australia. The 1983 World Cup, held in England, saw India beat Australia in the group stage, and this was followed by India’s first Test series win against Australia in 1986. India continued to perform well in the 1990s, winning several test matches and series against Australia, including a famous win at the WACA in Perth in 1991.
