IND vs BAN: Mohammed Shami Ruled Out Of Bangladesh ODI Series Due To New Injury, BCCI Announces Replacement

Senior India pacer Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series in Bangladesh due to a fresh shoulder injury which he copped during a training session, the BCCI announced on Saturday morning. The BCCI has also named fast bowler Umran Malik as Shami’s replacement for the ODI series.

“Fast bowler Mohd. Shami sustained a shoulder injury during a training session in the lead up to the ODI series against Bangladesh. He is currently under the supervision of the BCCI Medical Team at the NCA, Bengaluru and will not be able to take part in the three-match series,” the board said in their released statement.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Umran Malik as Shami’s replacement,” it added.

The tour will kick off with 3 ODIs, starting on Sunday, December 4, in Dhaka, where the 2nd ODI will also be played. For the 3rd ODI, Chattogram will be the host. The two Tests, part of the World Test Championship and crucial for India’s chances to reach the final, will be played in Chattogram and Dhaka.

According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, Shami had sustained his shoulder injury in a training session after he’d returned from Australia where India exited in the T20 World Cup semi-final.

Umran Malik recently made his ODI debut in New Zealand, picking 3 wickets in 3 ODIs, and did well on his debut to dismiss Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell.

Mohammed Shami is also unlikely to feature in the Test series. If Shami can’t be fit for the Test series too, then the selectors could name Navseep Saini or Mukesh Kumar as his replacement, both of whom are currently in Bangladesh with India A for the red-ball games.

India has a full-strength squad among the available players for this Bangladesh ODI series as Rohit Sharma’s team starts their preparation for the ODI World Cup 2023 later in the year in October-November at home.

Amongst the first-choice players, India are missing Jasprit Bumrah, who is recovering from a back injury, and Ravindra Jadeja, who has been ruled out of the ODI series and possibly from the Tests too as he continues his recovery from a knee surgery.

India’s squad for Bangladesh ODIs:

Rohit Sharma (C), KL Rahul (VC), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, Shreyas Iyer, Rahul Tripathi, Rishabh Pant (WK), Ishan Kishan (WK), Shahbaz Ahmed, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Siraj, Deepak Chahar, Kuldeep Sen, Umran Malik
