Veteran commentator Harsha Bhogle was in the firing line of the fans once again for his tweet in support of KS Bharat, whose position in India’s Test XI has come under question.

The BCCI selectors are set to announce the squad for the rest of the three Test matches against England on Thursday. While KS Bharat is likely to be retained in the squad, there are doubts over his place in the XI after his no-show in his Test career so far.

Having made his Test debut last year in the absence of the injured Rishabh Pant, KS Bharat has managed 221 runs in 7 Test matches at an average of only 20 with a highest score of 44. Known to be a specialist wicketkeeper, Bharat also has made some errors behind the stumps. Most recently, he missed a stumping of Ollie Pope in Vizag on the first ball the batter faced from Kuldeep Yadav.

His lack of contribution with the bat in Vizag – scores of 17 and 6 – has irked the fans who feel it’s time India hand a Test debut to young Dhruv Jurel, who averages 46 in first-class cricket.

Harsha Bhogle, though, isn’t on that page yet. In his tweet, the commentator opined that Bharat has been “top class” with his wicketkeeping and his contribution with the gloves has been crucial.

Harsha Bhogle tweeted: “I worry when reports on this series casually mention that KS Bharat hasn’t done well enough. Yes, he hasn’t delivered the runs with the bat but his keeping has been top class. While a keeper must deliver with two skills, we tend to measure his performance almost entirely by one metric which is unfair. An excellent catch could contribute 30+ runs.

Netizens didn’t concur with the senior commentator, pointing out that England’s Ben Foakes has been way better than Bharat with the gloves.

Fans hit back at Harsha Bhogle for his tweet in support of KS Bharat:
