IND vs ENG: 3 Players Who Might Replace Virat Kohli In The ODI Series

Virat Kohli

India’s triumph in the first ODI against England in Nagpur was a testament to the depth and resilience of the Indian cricket team, even in the absence of a stalwart like Virat Kohli.

With a target of 249, India managed to clinch the game by four wickets, scoring 251-6. Shubman Gill, stepping up to bat at number three, played a pivotal role in this victory, showcasing the team’s adaptability and strength.

As the series moves to its second match on February 9, 2025, the spotlight turns to who might fill the void left by Kohli’s absence.

Here’s a look at three players who could step up in Virat Kohli’s stead.

Rajat Patidar has been a significant figure in the domestic cricket scene, particularly in List-A cricket where he has compiled 2211 runs across 63 innings.

His average of 37.47 and a strike rate of 99.59 underline his ability to score consistently while maintaining a brisk scoring rate.

Patidar’s technique and temperament make him a suitable candidate for the middle order, especially in conditions where patience and precision are as crucial as aggression.

His experience in domestic cricket, coupled with his recent performances, suggests he could adapt well to international pressure, providing the stability and grit that Kohli brings to the team.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, known for his elegant stroke play and solid technique, has been turning heads both in the IPL and in domestic cricket.

His List-A record is nothing short of spectacular, with 4324 runs from 83 innings at an impressive average of 56.15 and a strike rate of 101.66.

Gaikwad has already made his mark in the international arena in a limited number of ODIs, scoring 115 runs.

His capability to build innings and accelerate as needed makes him a versatile choice for the top order.

His leadership in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings also adds a layer of strategic acumen to his profile, which could be beneficial in the middle overs where Kohli often plays a key role.

Suryakumar Yadav, known affectionately as ‘SKY’, has redefined the art of T20 batting with his 360-degree approach, but his prowess extends well into the 50-over format as well.

In List-A cricket, Yadav has amassed 3665 runs from 130 innings at an average of 32.72 with a strike rate of 104.11. His ability to play both orthodox and unorthodox shots can disrupt even the best of bowling attacks.

Although he has predominantly been an asset in T20s, his List-A stats indicate he can be equally effective in ODIs. Suryakumar’s inclusion could bring an element of unpredictability and flair to the batting line-up, a trait that often characterizes Kohli’s batting.

The absence of Kohli, who is not just a player but an institution in Indian cricket, presents a unique challenge but also an opportunity for these players to prove their mettle on the international stage.

Each brings something different to the table: Patidar with his solid, classical batting; Gaikwad with his elegant and consistent scoring; and Yadav with his dynamic and innovative stroke play.

The selection could depend on various factors including current form, specific match conditions, and the strategic needs against England’s bowling attack.

As India prepares for the second ODI, the team management will have to weigh these options carefully.

The transition from domestic to international cricket is always fraught with challenges, but with the right backing, any of these players could step into Kohli’s shoes, not to replace him but to add their unique flavor to the team’s quest for continued success.

The focus will also be on how these players adapt to the pressure of international cricket, especially in a series that serves as a precursor to the Champions Trophy 2025.

In conclusion, while Virat Kohli’s presence is irreplaceable, the depth in Indian cricket ensures that players like Rajat Patidar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Suryakumar Yadav are ready to take up the mantle.

Their performances in the upcoming matches will not only be crucial for the team’s immediate success but also indicative of India’s cricketing future.
