IND vs NZ 2nd T20I: 2 Most Important Statements After The Match

Team India won the 2nd T20I against New Zealand in a closely contested match, leveling the ongoing three-match T20I series 1-1 and setting up a decider for February 1, 2023 in Ahmedabad. The match was played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, but was a low-scoring affair, unlike the expectations of the Lucknow pitch being a “batter’s paradise”.

The New Zealand team won the toss and elected to bat first, but the slow wicket and exceptional Indian bowlers saw the Kiwis struggling to reach the triple-digit mark, scoring only 99/8 in their 20 overs. Arshdeep Singh took 2 wickets, while Hardik Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar and Deepak Hooda each took one. Shivam Mavi was the only bowler who went wicketless.

The Indian chase was tricky, with opener Shubman Gill losing his wicket early on. Suryakumar Yadav was the top scorer with 26* runs off 31 balls, securing the win for India. The Kiwi bowlers managed to take 4 Indian wickets, with Michael Bracewell, Ish Sodhi and Mark Chapman being the successful bowlers.

In the second T20I, Team India seemed to have bounced back from their loss in the first T20I with a solid performance from their bowling department, especially with the inclusion of Yuzvendra Chahal. The pitch in Lucknow, however, proved to be a slow wicket that was not ideal for batting, and the dew factor late in the game made it even more challenging for the Kiwis.

Captain Mitchell Santner said that it was a close game and that the calmness of Surya and Hardik helped India get over the line. Captain Hardik Pandya, on the other hand, expressed his disappointment with the wickets, calling them “a shocker” and not ideal for T20 cricket.

“It was a great game of cricket. To get it so close was a great effort from the bowlers. If we’d got an extra 10 or 15, it could have been the difference. The calmness of Surya and Hardik to get them over the line was pretty good. We bowled 16 or 17 overs of spin, definitely something different. With the bounce out there, it looked challenging. You are not sure what a good total is. 120 might have been a good score. Rotation might have been the difference,” Santner said.

Player of the Match Suryakumar Yadav talked about the importance of adapting to the situation, which he credited as key in securing the win. He also acknowledged the pressure, but was able to keep his nerves calm with the help of Hardik Pandya.

Overall, the 2nd T20I was a closely contested match, with India’s exceptional bowling performance and Suryakumar Yadav’s top-notch batting securing the win for the Men in Blue. The series is now tied 1-1 and the decider on February 1, 2023 in Ahmedabad is highly anticipated.

“A different version of SKY today. Adapting to the situation was very important when I went into bat. After losing Washy (Washington Sundar), it was important for someone to take the game till the end. It was my mistake, it was definitely not a run, I didn’t see where the ball was going. It was a challenging wicket. We didn’t think it’s turn out this way in the second innings but it’s important to adapt,” Suryakumar Yadav said.

“We just needed one hit in that over and it was very important to calm our nerves. Before we got the winning runs, he (Hardik) came and told me ‘you are going to finish on this ball’ and that gave me a lot of confidence,” Sky added.
