IND vs NZ: 6 Indians Who Were Part Of T20 WC Squad But Are Not Included For New Zealand T20Is

Just a week after India crashed out of the T20 World Cup 2022, hammered by 10 wickets by England in the semi-final in Adelaide, the Men In Blue will resume the bilateral international assignments with a 3-T20I against New Zealand starting Friday in Wellington. India last toured New Zealand in 2020, when they won the T20I series 5-0.


Captain Rohit Sharma has been given a rest from the entire New Zealand tour, which also includes 3 ODIs. In his absence, Hardik Pandya will lead the side in the T20I and Shikhar Dhawan in the ODIs.

Sharma had a disappointing T20 WC with the bat – scoring 116 runs in 6 innings at an average of 19 and strike rate of 106, with just one scratchy half-century against the Netherlands to his name.


KL Rahul, the designated vice-captain, is also rested for this New Zealand tour. Rishabh Pant has been named the vice-captain for both the New Zealand T20I and ODI series.

Rahul scored two half-centuries in the T20 WC – vs Bangladesh and Zimbabwe – but otherwise against stronger opponents – Pakistan, South Africa, and England – Rahul couldn’t make an impact. Overall, Rahul scored 128 runs at an average of 21 and a strike rate of 120.


Virat Kohli ended up as the leading run-scorer in the T20 WC 2022, amassing 296 runs at a stunning average of 98 and strike rate of 136. Kohli raised 4 half-centuries in 6 innings, including against Pakistan and England. However, his efforts went in vain as India failed to reach the final.
Along with Rohit and Rahul, Virat Kohli has been given a rest from the New Zealand tour prior to India’s tour of Bangladesh, which also involved two Tests.


It feels like Dinesh Karthik may have played his last for India at the T20 World Cup 2022. The 37-year-old was dropped during the tournament after managing just 14 runs in 3 innings and was replaced by Rishabh Pant for the game against Zimbabwe and the semi-final vs England.

The 37-year-old is not included (read: dropped) for the New Zealand T20I series. Apart from Pant, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan are the other two wicket-keepers in the squad.


Ashwin played in all 6 matches of the T20 WC ahead of leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal because Ashwin also added batting depth, which came to use against Pakistan and Bangladesh.

However, Ashwin with the ball lacked potency against strong opponents – Pakistan, South Africa, and England – he picked only 1 wicket in the three matches against these teams, and 5 wickets vs Zimbabwe and Netherlands. We will have to wait and see whether Ashwin’s T20I and ODI careers are still alive or the selectors have moved away from the 36-year-old.


After making a late entry into the T20 WC squad, due to injury to Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami bagged 6 wickets in as many matches, but couldn’t deliver a match-winning performance, and even went for 39 runs in 3 overs vs England.

With his workload in the other two formats needing to be managed, he’s been excluded from the New Zealand tour. It seems highly unlikely that Shami will play a T20I in the coming next year.
