IND vs NZ: Umpires Explained Why The Toss Was Delayed

Cricket LoungeBy Cricket Lounge03/12/2021Updated:08/02/2023No Comments2 Mins Read

IND vs NZ: There was a big delay in the start of the much-awaited second Test match of the IND vs NZ two-match series, as the outfield at the Wankhede Stadium was wet after excessive rainfall in the financial capital of India.

Even though, it hasn’t rained today (3rd December), the outfield was still very wet and there were wet patches around the area where bowlers mark their run-up.

IND vs NZ: Umpires Explained Why The Toss Was Delayed

Fans, who have been waiting from IND vs NZ were curious to know why the toss was delayed when there was no rain in the middle. On-field umpires Nitin Menon and Anil Choudhary answered the question which was being asked by almost everybody and said that wet patches can cause injuries in the middle, especially for the fast bowlers, and this is why they waited for condition to dry a bit and get better.

“The conditions won’t be 100% because it’s been raining for two days. Our main concern is the safety of the players, so if the close-in conditions get better, we’ll have a game today. The concern is the in-field,” Nitin Menon said.

Anil Choudhary also emphasised on the same point and said that the main concern was bowlers’s run-up as there is always a possibility of a fast bowler losing his mark and falling down on a wet patch, and cause an injury.

“We are not starting on time. Our concern is run-up and the close-in areas, so hoping for it to improve. The pitch is certainly fine, it’s the grass areas that’s a concern,” Anil Choudhary added.

And for those who think why the toss was delayed, you can read the law 13.4 here:

“The captains shall toss a coin for the choice of innings, on the field of play and in the presence of one or both of the umpires, not earlier than 30 minutes, nor later than 15 minutes before the scheduled or any rescheduled time for the start of play.”
