Complete List Of Indian Batsmen Who Have Scored Hundred On Test Debut: Test cricket, often referred to as the cornerstone of international cricket, provides a unique stage for debutants to prove their mettle. The aspiration of scoring a century in one’s first Test match is shared universally by cricketers. Indeed, in the 144 years since the first Test match in March 1877, only 112 debutants have managed to achieve this dream.

From India’s cricketing perspective, this list of debut centurions is short yet impressive. Seventeen Indian batsmen have achieved this milestone, beginning with Lala Amarnath in 1933 to Yashasvi Jaiswal most recently in 2023. Let’s take a closer look at each player’s accomplishments. Let’s take a look at the Complete List Of Indian Batsmen Who Have Scored Hundred On Test Debut.

Lala Amarnath was the first Indian to score a debut century, crafting a brilliant 118 against England in 1933. Nearly two decades later, Deepak Shodhan followed in his footsteps, scoring 110 against Pakistan in 1952. Just three years later, A.G. Kripal Singh scored an unbeaten hundred against New Zealand in 1955.

The 1950s saw another Indian debutant centurion, Abbas Ali Baig, who scored 112 against England in 1959. Five years later, Hanumant Singh joined the club, marking 105 against England in 1964. Gundappa Viswanath, one of India’s finest batsmen, scored a commanding 137 against Australia on his debut in 1969.

The Amarnath family made history once again when Surinder Amarnath scored 124 against New Zealand in his 1976 debut. Mohammad Azharuddin, a future Indian captain, made a mark with his debut century, scoring 110 against England in 1984. Pravin Amre added his name to the list by hitting 103 against South Africa in 1992.

The late 20th and early 21st centuries witnessed several memorable debut centuries. Sourav Ganguly, another future captain, scored 131 against England in 1996, while the explosive opener Virender Sehwag managed 105 against South Africa in 2001. Suresh Raina broke a decade-long drought, scoring 120 against Sri Lanka on his debut in 2010.

India’s former opening duo both scored centuries on debut: Shikhar Dhawan hammered 187 against Australia in 2013, followed by Rohit Sharma’s 177 against West Indies in the same year. In 2018, Prithvi Shaw marked his arrival with a majestic 134 against West Indies.

The most recent entrants to this coveted club of Indian batsmen are Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Iyer’s debut century came against New Zealand in 2021, and Jaiswal, who is also one of the Indian batsmen, emulated him two years later against West Indies in 2023.
